My youngest is taking Spanish 1 in ninth grade. Here is what we are using:
Lesson plans and flashcards that I created
Various games, worksheets, activities from TeachersPayTeachers stores
My youngest is the third child that I have used the BJU Press Spanish 1 curriculum set with. It was an initial investment, but I feel that I have gotten my money’s worth from it. If someone were to only be using it for one child, I would recommend finding the textbook and teacher’s manuals used and then just purchasing the student workbook and tests new. Personally, I make copies of the exams for each child so I do not have to repurchase the set each year. One of this benefits of this curriculum is access to the online audio links! No CDs to keep track of, just easy, instant access to the audio needed for lessons, activities, and workbook exercises. The speakers are native Spanish speakers, so sometimes I find it helpful to use the option to slow down the speed on the audio files.
In order to keep our days organized, I created editable lesson plans. The textbook pages and activities are listed, as well as the workbook pages and activities.
I also created double sided flashcards with the words from each chapter. My daughter goes through these and does Duolingo for five minutes at the start of each class. It helps to review vocabulary frequently, and the chapters move pretty quickly with introducing new terms.
Review can also be fun! Games from TeachersPayTeachers.com stores are easy to print and play. We especially like card games, board games, and bingo games that take five minutes or less to play. Some of our favorites are this guessing game, greetings card game, Battleship, spoons, matching (I use it as Bingo), I have/who has. I am excited to play Clue, her favorite board game, with these cards in Spanish.
These flap books are awesome for learning conjugations! The author also offers irregular verbs and different tenses. These geography pages for Spanish speaking countries are great project work. Worksheets are also great for notes and review, like this one on conjugations of frequently used verbs.
It can be hard to fit it all into a 45-60 minute class period. I find that the first 15 minutes spent in review with flashcards, Duolingo, and games helps her be so much more successful that just sticking with the textbook and workbook. Engagement and repetition along with a strong curriculum are key for foreign language learning!
