Tuesday Teaching Tip #2: Homeschool Days at museums, zoos, and other local venues

The morning temperatures in Central Texas are finally starting to drop, and I actually put on a cardigan this morning. The leaves have started to pile up under the trees in our front yard; fall has arrived! Or, as I like to think of it, field trip weather has arrived.

Tuesday Tip is to look for Homeschool Days at area museums, zoos, cultural events, and other venues. Entrance fees and ticket prices be pricey. Homeschool Day events usually offer special rates on tickets and activities, and sometimes they even offer free admission! Events might have vendors, activity tables, specially priced or free student workshops, and educational supplemental materials for the teachers. Area organizations that hold annual conventions, such as gemological societies or Renaissance fairs, may also offer days for homeschoolers. These events are usually educational and fun for all ages, with attractions for kids, teens, and adults. Check the details, as some may require reservations or advance ticket purchase.

This past Friday, Bullock Texas History Museum offered free admission and discounted movie tickets for the fall Homeschool Day. On top of a free day at the 3-story Texas history museum, there were representatives there from various organizations with free educational demonstrations, crafts, posters and handouts for participants.

Your homework is to find a nearby Homeschool Day event that fits into your schedule this fall, whether it is a museum, pumpkin patch, or annual event. Here is one for anyone in Central Texas: Austin Gem & Mineral Society has their annual Gem Capers convention this weekend with a special Education Day on Friday, 10/17 with free admission for teachers and students. There are hands-on activities for kids, unique specimens on display, demonstrations, and each child gets a rock or mineral to take home. Keep a look-out for educational days for homeschool students in your area, there are many to be found this fall!

Enjoy the cooler weather, and take your classroom on the road!
