Whether you teach in a classroom or at home, there are good days and there are no-to-good days. In the classroom, the kids go home at the end of the day. There are breaks for lunch, gym, and recess. In a homeschool setting, the kids are always there, along with the household demands. There are no daily breaks. Both educational setting have their pros and cons, but some days it can seem harder to catch a break or take a breather at home.
Just like the decision to become a classroom teacher, the decision to homeschool is not easy, and is not a one time decision. It is a decision that you make every morning: today you will show up for your students and provide them with the love and education that their young hearts and minds deserve.
You have to keep making it on the hard days, after the “new curriculum smell” and back to school excitement wears off. You have to make it on the days when you feel overwhelmed and under water. You have to make it when the budget it tight. You have to make it when your household is going through a major life event, a sickness, a rough patch in the marriage. You have to choose it when there is no bell to keep you on schedule and no administration to hold you accountable for their learning. It is not an easy choice to show up day after day with joy and determination, but it is one worth making over and over again.
Choose progress over perfection. Choose to live a life of freedom from other’s schedules, and freedom to choose the curriculum best for your teaching style and your child’s learning style. Choose to be the smile and words of encouragement through that frustrating math lesson or endless writing assignment. Choose quality time with your kids and watching them learn and grow daily.
Choose your homeschool or classroom today over anything else, and give it the love and attention that you have always wanted for your children’s education.
