Changes to PE this spring

PE is one of those classes we have struggled with. None of my kids are athletic or enjoy team sports, but we need a half credit of PE for this year. Bowling every Tuesday has been a staple along with walking several times a week and occasional yoga. I wanted a more structured schedule for this spring, and to incorporate activities that they enjoy and will stick with after the PE class is done.

Here is the weekly schedule we will be following, with my high school kids blessing and commitment to adhere to it:

Monday Movement: We will walk or bike to the nearby park to shoot hoops or walk the track. I feel like they are bored with walks in the neighborhood, so we are adding in a destination. The bad weather alternative is to play Nintendo Switch Sports or Fit Ring Adventure at home (both of which we already own and they like playing).

Tuesday Bowling: Watch short bowling tips videos and then head to our local bowling alley for practice. The EVO where we live offers bowling for 30 minutes for $5 on Tuesdays, and the girls own bowling shoes.

Wednesday Weights: We will follow the strength training routine for teens at Workout Labs using hand weights and introduce similar exercises on the Total Gym. We did not do much strength training in the fall, so this will be new.

Yoga Flow Fridays: We will use Gaiam yoga videos for instruction and practice. I am using the Yoga for Beginners as the instructional DVD to teach the poses. For practice, I enjoy the short sessions in Rodney Yee’s Yoga for Your Week and A.M. Yoga for Your Week.

Right now, the plan is to follow our PE schedule at 3pm on the scheduled days. The girls have drama club at a library in a nearby town on Thursday afternoons, so the 3pm slot will not work on Thursdays.

I have high hopes that this schedule will work well for their interests and have enough variety that they will not get bored with it. Will update in the summer with what worked and what did not!
