Tuesday Teaching Tip #12: Getting back into a homeschool routine after the holiday break

We took three weeks off for Christmas break again this year. I originally planned for two, but the kids and I agreed that we needed that third week. Christmas is so hectic with their groups’ parties, performances, traditional outings, and family events. We all needed a week to recoup. That, and my freshman wanted one more week to sleep in.

Since New Year’s, I have been busy making the Google Classroom assignments for January and getting mentally prepared to return to school after a long break. We will start back to homeschool on January 12, and my senior starts classes at the community college on January 20. Since I am the mode of transportation back and forth from college while still homeschooling my freshman, it takes a little juggling. In many ways, it is just like summer; it will take a couple of weeks to get into the swing of our new spring semester schedule.

My mantra for this time is “space and grace”, meaning give my kids the leeway to figure out time management for themselves and give grace for all the times I have to gently remind then of what still needs to be done before school is done for the day. My goal is not a set schedule to adhere to, but rather finding a routine that will work for us this spring.

What changes is the spring semester brining to your schedule? New classes, sports, clubs, or co-ops? Remember that change takes time and patience. Give yourself and your kiddos lots of space and grace over the next couple of weeks to find your new groove.
