Tip #33: Ten Steps to Start Homeschooling

Are you wanting to homeschool your child(ren)? Wondering how to get started? Today, I have something just for you: 10 Steps to Start Homeschooling.

1. Look up the homeschooling laws for your state. HSLDA has an online resource here: https://hslda.org/legal/

2. Contact your child’s school or local school district and perform necessary steps to officially withdraw your child from school.

3. Set up your documentation system (grades, attendance, etc.) required by your state’s homeschooling laws before the year starts so reporting at the end of the year is easy.

4. Choose courses appropriate for your child’s grade, academic goals, and to fulfill state requirements.

5. Shop for and decide on curriculum according to educational goals, your teaching style, and your child’s learning style. Gather the needed educations materials for your child such as books, computer, science & art supplies, and school supplies.

6. Set up a basic year plan for your homeschool: first day, last day, holidays, etc.  This will provide the framework for your lesson planning.

7. Design a daily schedule and homeschooling routine that fits your family. This may change over time!

8. Designate an area for your child’s education in your home for them to work and to store school materials.

9. Add in regular educational outings and social events for your child such as field trips, park days, or homeschool group meet-ups.

10. Get excited about the new homeschool year and plan an exciting first day to celebrate your new adventure!
