My kinder kid has reached the last few readers in her Starfall curriculum, which happen to be about artists. Today, her little reader was about Vincent Van Gogh. I found this book, Usborne's Art Treasury, at our beloved library, which contains activities based on artwork of famous artists. We are creating a landscape with paints… Continue reading Keeping art and artist study budget friendly
You need these trays
Have you tried the teacher crack dealer yet, a.k.a. Lakeshore Learning? This store is addictive. It's the worst. And the best. I love it. It's terrible. You have to try it. All the cool homeschool teachers do it... Last summer I bought these trays on sale for $9.99. This is the best thing I have… Continue reading You need these trays
Online art lesson resources (free!)
I discovered a gem earlier this year, but did not get around to actually trying it out until last month: online art lessons at ourhomeschoolforum.com. The series is called "Art Through the Year", and now in its second year, there are more than a dozen video lessons to choose from. Each lesson focuses on specific… Continue reading Online art lesson resources (free!)
Our spring break week (or monthly week off, whatever you want to call it) and handling boredom
As I have mentioned before in an earlier post, since Christmas, we went back to taking one week per month off from school. It works out nicely for us to take our break this week. The spring break for the local schools would have been a rotten week for us to take a break anyway,… Continue reading Our spring break week (or monthly week off, whatever you want to call it) and handling boredom

Mensa for Kids and next year’s Pi Day Plan (because we did nothing this year)
I sometimes wonder if I could have handled homeschooling pre-Internet. There are some seriously cool resources online. Free resources. So, so many, cool, free resources that it boggles the mind. So many things that are amazing, and yet I will never get around to using them, but I like having those resources in my pocket.… Continue reading Mensa for Kids and next year’s Pi Day Plan (because we did nothing this year)
And the games have started already
My kids are making up Mad-Libs on their easel in the living room...in their pajamas. "Give me a thing...a common noun thing!" Game Day has started without me, or even breakfast. Yesterday, I received the used teacher manuals I ordered off ebay for a grammar curriculum that I am considering for next year. My Type-A… Continue reading And the games have started already
Fun cloud painting
This afternoon, we are mixing up shaving cream and white school glue to make clouds on blue cardstock. After reviewing types of clouds in our Children's Weather Encyclopedia, we read Little Cloud by Eric Carle. The girls then mixed up their cloud paint, and shaped cloud pictures using plastic spoons and big paint brushes. Easy… Continue reading Fun cloud painting

Why and how we use Life of Fred books
When we first started homeschooling three years ago, I was not sure about anything. I was a high school science teacher teaching first and second grade to my own kids, with no experience with elementary teaching, just a deisre to offer my kids...more. I decided I could do it all on my own, come up… Continue reading Why and how we use Life of Fred books
